Music with Ms. Fortgang

A majority of our Scholars at MLK come to the music room once a week for their General Music Prep! In these classes, we take the knowledge and resources Ms. Hillenbrand and Mr. Villatoro have taught us and transition from foundational music concepts to deeper musical understanding and independent skill-building. We learn about:

  • Rhythm and Meter: Reading complex rhythmic notation.
  • Melody and Harmony: Singing in parts and understanding basic chord structures.
  • World Music: Exploring the music, instruments, and traditions of diverse cultures.
  • Instrumental Skills: Developing proficiency on the recorder and pitched percussion instruments.

And SO much more!!

By participating in singing, dancing, playing, and composing, students gain the knowledge and confidence necessary for future musical electives like band and chorus.

The MLK Chorus:

The MLK Chorus is an exciting opportunity for students in grades three through five who love to sing.We focus on developing strong, healthy singing habits while exploring a diverse repertoire of music! From folk songs and musical theater to pop and contemporary pieces, students will learn put on many different performances, celebrating and paying homage to a variety of events, artists, and musical genres. We celebrate teamwork, listening, and expression. It’s more than just singing; it’s about finding your voice and being part of a supportive group. Chorus meets every Thursday afternoon from 1:30-2:15.

Our first concert will be on Friday, October 17th, at MLK for Hispanic Heritage Month!

The Winter Concert is scheduled for Tuesday, December 9th at 6pm at the WMHS!

Stay tuned for more events throughout the year.

The MLK Band!

  • Instrument Technique: Proper posture, breathing, tone production, and fingerings for their chosen instrument (Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Percussion, etc.).
  • Ensemble Skills: Learning to listen, blend, and work collaboratively as part of a large musical group.

Art with Ms. Romeo

At Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, we explore two- and three-dimensional visual art techniques while learning the essential Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Our lessons cover a variety of themes, including Hispanic Heritage, Black History, and Women’s History. Students work with fine art materials such as oil pastels, watercolor, and air-dry clay, as well as recycled materials and digital media. Art history and vocabulary are integrated into every lesson. Students are encouraged to create original artwork in addition to their class assignments through open studio time and access to a variety of materials. They also help design and create decor for school-wide events. This year, we will host two district-wide art shows where selected student artwork will be on display.

Our winter showcase will take place on December 7th at the District Central Board Room.
